Where Faith and Art Intersect

We Need Art

When artists talk about how to help people find the artwork they create, one of them usually cautioned, “No one needs art.”

I may not argue aloud, but my inner conversation goes something like this, “People may not know they need art. They may not perceive it as a need like food and shelter, but their heart and soul needs art. Maybe, it isn’t art painted on a canvas, drawn on paper, cast in bronze, or chiseled in stone, but we need art.”

Our Creator always knows our needs better than we do. God provided art—living, changing, magnificent beauty.

We remember God’s promise when we see an arc of color spread across the sky. We marvel and feel hopeful when we see the purity and ungraspable colors.

Sunrises and sunsets remind us of the master Artist.

A field of wildflowers laugh at the chaos of our soul and invite a deep breath as we surrender to awe.

When scripture admonishes us not to worry, Jesus says, “even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”(the flowers of the field)

The Message Bible asks, “...have you ever seen color and design quite like it?”

The Master Artist invites us to be His apprentices. The book of Exodus describes Bezaleel, the man overseeing the creation of articles for the Tabernacle, as the first person the Bible filled with the Spirit of God, giving him wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.

Some do representational art, like I do. We shine a spotlight on God’s wonder.

Some pour out color and design from inside themselves, allowing the viewer access to the beauty in their heart.

Artists have a rich legacy in God’s kingdom.

All of us are invited to find a home in our Creator.
