Where Faith and Art Intersect
Good Works
Some weeks are harder than others to get any work done. I think I need a block of time to create anything meaningful. Interruptions or even anticipation of a major event make setting down at my easel difficult.
Difficult or not, honoring the call of Matthew 5:12-16 to let my light shine and do good works, is a commitment.
On weeks like this one, I may simply carry a sketch book and render in pencil whatever tells a story. My sketches won’t end up on my web page or Instagram. Yet it keeps me observing, thinking, and practicing.
It keeps me in touch with the Giver of all good things.
It prevents me from the places I turn to numb my heart and mind. Without intentionally honoring the moment, I escape into a game of sudoku or scan the headlines. Not read—just give a cursory nod to the outside world.
Sometimes I pray. But prayer tenderizes my heart and awakens the need I’m trying to avoid.
It’s a passive pity party. It is not lighting the light given. It is shadow living.
My prayer today is that none of us dwell in the shadows but walk in the light of God’s mercy and grace.
