Make Your Idea a Reality

When someone comes to me with a big idea they started but hit a roadblock, we look together for the obstacles.

In the process of understanding, I ask questions like, “What scares you about this pursuit?”

Answers range from no fears to questions about their abilities or authority. Typically, they say, “Who do I think I am to do this?  People will think I’m crazy.”

Just telling someone they can do anything they want to do doesn’t quiet their inner voices of doubt. They need to discover and say aloud all the reasons they are the perfect person for the job. Putting words to their inner knowing makes it real and tangible and dispels nagging fears. It’s like shining a light into the corner of a room where a child thinks a monster is lurking and discovering it’s only a stuffed animal fallen from its perch.

I ask them to tell me more about why they want to do it. What will be lost to their life and the lives of others if their dreams never become a reality? What will change if it does?

I listen for their passion. I watch for the places emotions almost choke their words or the times they sparkle with excitement. How does their body language change? Are they slumping, squirming like trying to escape, or so animated they can barely stay sitting?

You can notice these things about yourself although it is hard. It’s better to ask someone you trust to listen and notice for you. The sparkle and passion are your lifeline. What you thought and the images that came to mind define why you do what you do.  Hold on to them as you pursue your plans.

The places you lose energy or feel a sense of dread evidenced by slumping, squirming, or avoiding are clues to a deeply held mindsets that need to be explored and changed if you are to accomplish your purposes.

Return to the place you sparkle. Reject any self-talk that diminishes that passion. Reject any comments or looks that deflated that joy.
